Sustained Investigation 8

SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION: What does it mean to be sheltered?

Ideas Visually Evident: I knew that I wanted to create an umbrella in order to think about the idea of shelter from the outside but while ideating I was talking to some friends and the idea of hanging the clouds underneath the umbrella came up. I thought it was a really interesting concept and it turned out really well.

Processes Used: I spent a lot of time just getting the bamboo skewers to stay up and used a lot of glue to keep everything attached.

Materials: Rice Paper, Bamboo Sticks, Wood, Cotton

Process Shots:

Tripod Mug

Image
Tripod mug Insert pre fire photo here: Construction What skills, techniques, or process did you employ to create your mug? I used the reductive technique. I carved out designs into the sides of the piece and worked my not all the way up it. How does your final construction look? Also describe the difficulties in construction. My final construction is a little lopsided but other than that I think that I really like how it turned out. I struggled a little with the undulation of the mug and the lid but in the end it turned out okay. Final Reflection

Image
CERAMICS FINAL REFLECTION Photo of final glaze piece Final thought on the best parts of this piece. Project 1 I thought that the best parts of this piece were the inside glazing and the small diamond detail I added to the front. I actually put a lot more care into these parts than any other part of the piece and I think that they ended up turning out better because of that. Project 2 I liked how the details on the body turned out  on this piece. I used slip trailing to get it to look the way that I wanted it to look. With the glazing it pops a little and I’m very proud of it. Project 3 I used the mug for the first time and I got really giddy and excited because, “Oh my god I made this alkshfla.” I really liked how the glazing worked with the carvings I had. You can see them clearly on the bottom but they’re more obscured on the top and it gives it this really cool effect. Project 4 This shoe was difficult but eventually I got it mostly right I t...

My Independent Writing Project: The School of Fighting Arts Against Demonkind

Author’s Note Dear Reader, The idea for this may seem a bit strange at first, but I urge you to give it a shot. It’s not as weird as you think. It came to me in the middle of class while I was discussing a different topic in a critique group. So many people at SAS are mixed, part Asian, part something else; I began to think: what if there was a girl just like that in a story? And, of course, not just your typical coming of age story where the girl finally comes to terms with being half one culture and half another. More of a girl who knew who she was but was held back because people were scared of her. And thus the character Amani Kearny was born. Writing her was fun and after a certain point, it was like I wasn’t typing. There’s a certain way Amani talks — loads of sarcasm along with the barest hints to what she actually feels— that makes her feel like a lot of the people that I talk to on a daily basis. Which is most likely why it was so interesting. If I had...
