Sculpture: Reductive

Image
This was our final project. When we first got it I sketched out some ideas on the page, I wanted to take some influence from the Celtic and Egyptian projects because of how the shapes are very geometric. For the surface, I used the cutout idea but made it more of an amoeba shape. For volume, I used the one hoke design at the top that you can see in the first photo. I ended up needing to reduce the sculpture a bit more but it has the overall shape that I wanted to go for. I also changed the color scheme to gold and silver after hearing that it looked like an award. I think that if I had some more time then I could have refined it more and made it somewhat better. I do like how the top part of the piece ended up turning out.

Acrylic Painting

Image
This is the acrylic painting, the last project in the painting unit. The process started with laying a base coat and my base coat was an hombre of yellow to red since that was the basis of my painting. Then I went over and painted my hills and then my tree. I used 7 art techniques on this piece. You cant see it very clearly but the two hills on the bottom have been sponged, the darker line on the other one was made using impasto, I did some pallete knife painting on the tree as well as taping to get some straight lines, I did some scumbling in the background and I also used glazing for the paint I used for scumbling and you can see the scragraffito on the tree. I ended up liking the way the packground turned out although I wish that I had used that for the entire thing instead of only the back. I thought of this painting as a less complicated amature version of the reference piece.

Water Color: Architecture

Image
This was our second water color project and it was to use a photo of the school and convert it into a water color painting. Before even starting that we had to make a table of the different techniques that can be used in water color. After that we started painting based off of a picture that we chose. I used a blending wash for the building and then used wet on wet for the geometric shapes and I used tape for the green square and I used dry brush for the red streaks and then I used salt on the building as well. I used masking fluid between the shapes and I used feathering on the shapes too. That is a total of eight techniques. It turned out okay I think but I would have prefferec spending a little more time on it so that maybe I could fill in the blank spaces better.

Water Color: Map Scheme

Image
So this was the first of our painting unit and the first of our watercolor as well. We took reference photos of maps and collaged them into a piece with three sections and in each section we had to use water color pencils to create some kind of color scheme. For my first section I did a monochromatic one in blue, for the second section I did an analogous color scheme with red, red orange and orange and for the last one I did a complementary color scheme with yellow and purple. I enjoyed making this since I was able to use watercolor pencils and make something that I think looks really nice.

Printmaking: Screenprinting

Image
This was our last print project and this time we used screen printing. Before using the screen at all we had to prepare the backgrounds. The first stemp was to put ink on to a palate and use different tools to make places where there would be no color and designs, this would become the first layer. The second one was where we put a stencil on styrofoam, traced out what we wanted and then used that as our second layer after printing. After that, we had to make a stencil for the animal that we wanted to show on our project. I decided to make a squid and so cut it out of some butcher paper. I then had one cut out that would produce an image where the print would only show inside and where the print would show outside. That's where the screen comes in. We placed our prints on the paper and laid the screen over top. We put a row of ink at the top of the screen and then dragged the ink across it to lay it on the paper. Once you lifted the screen voila! Your print was done. Then I...

Printamaking: Drypoint

Image
This project was our second printmaking project. We used some metal carving tools to carve out lines in plexiglass to make our prints. After we finished the carving stage we had to take some ink and roll it out onto the plexiglass. Once the plexiglass was thoroughly covered you then had to take a cheesecloth and wipe off the extra ink and press the ink into the lines. Once the majority was off you could take a q-tip and clean it up just a bit more. While working on all of this your paper would be sitting in water and once you're ready, you dry it off a bit and then you're ready to print. For this project, we used a printing press to make out prints. You put the plexiglass down, ink side up then laid the paper down on top. After that, you'd flip the press so that they were covered and then roll it across and voila! You have a print. I think the difficult part of this was getting a print that looked. nice. I went through 5 or six that didn't turn out the best befo...

Printmaking: Linoleum

Image
For this project, we started a new unit, the printmaking unit. In this unit, we used some new materials including a carving tool, a brayer and a barren. The process for printing starts with tracing the image you want to print onto a piece of paper. From there you trace the simplified image onto both sides of the Linoleum block. One side with the silhouette, the other with details. From there you carve both sides out. Once that is done you use a brayer to put ink onto the silhouette side and then put a paper on top after which you use a barren to help the transfer. After that dries you use another color of ink on the detailed side and repeat the process. The end looks like the images above. I really liked how the endproduct turned out, especially the first one. I wish that I had made the carvings match up so that I wouldn't have had to do it by hand though.

Self Portrait

Image
So this was my grid self-portrait. Getting to this end piece was a bit of a process: first I had a photo taken of me, then I had to edit the photo to make it black and white and a bit easier to draw. After that I had to draw a grid over the picture as well as over the paper I would be drawing on and from there I would be filling in each square with the proper values. I think something I really like about this is that if you look at the top half it genuinely resembles me. The one thing I really wish I could improve on though is the teeth and the mouth. From that point on the drawing kind of went south and that's a bit frustrating. The goal though is to get better at drawing the things I'm not the best with!  This next picture is of my mirror self-portrait. This one was definitely the most difficult of the two, but I still managed to finish! The steps for this were actually quite simple. You draw a base head and put the guidelines for eyes, nose, mouth, and ears and ...

Still Life

Image
Here it is! The final product of the still life drawing! For this piece, we were told to draw an item sitting in front of us a realistically as possible. We started with a contour of the object and from there went up to shading and highlights to make the object stand out and look good. One thing that I really like about this is that I was able to create the shadows and highlights that make the apple look somewhat realistic. the shading took some time and a few re-do's but in the end, it turned out pretty well. I would have liked to improve the background and give the drawing some depth to make the scene look real and the apple look 3D. This was my draft where I practiced how to use the drawing technique triangle. Triangle is when you have one object in front of two others in a triangle formation. Out of all the ones I tried this was the most successful since I was able to capture the contour of the of the objects and place them in a way that was visually interesting. ...

Linear Perspective

Image
This was our linear perspective drawing, we started with different shapes on the paper and connected the corners of them to a single point. From there we shaded the paper with some charcoal and color and then highlighted the shapes to give them a bit of a building like look. I think that the one thing that I could improve on is maybe me my shading, getting the values to be darker near the vanishing point and getting progressively lighter as I go out and one thing I really liked about it was that I had this circular motion thing going on with the whole page.  This was the two point perspective drawing where we were to draw a city from eye level. There were two vanishing points along the sides where we connected the edges of the building to give the picture a three-dimensional feel.  The one thing I really regret is that I haven't had the time to finish the piece. My goal is to end up finishing it and being able to show off my drawing. But what I ...

My Independent Writing Project: The School of Fighting Arts Against Demonkind

Author’s Note Dear Reader, The idea for this may seem a bit strange at first, but I urge you to give it a shot. It’s not as weird as you think. It came to me in the middle of class while I was discussing a different topic in a critique group. So many people at SAS are mixed, part Asian, part something else; I began to think: what if there was a girl just like that in a story? And, of course, not just your typical coming of age story where the girl finally comes to terms with being half one culture and half another. More of a girl who knew who she was but was held back because people were scared of her. And thus the character Amani Kearny was born. Writing her was fun and after a certain point, it was like I wasn’t typing. There’s a certain way Amani talks — loads of sarcasm along with the barest hints to what she actually feels— that makes her feel like a lot of the people that I talk to on a daily basis. Which is most likely why it was so interesting. If I had...

Israeli Palestinian Conflict

LINES OF DEMARCATION: Where should the border between Israel and Palestine be drawn?  The Two State Solution: Israel becomes its own country and Palestine becomes its own country.  HOUSING SETTLEMENTS: How do you propose settling the unresolved dispute over Israeli Housing settlements into the west Bank? What should be done about the housing settlements that have already been built?  JERUSALEM: Jerusalem is a Holy City to Jews, Muslims, and Christians. How do you propose to make Jerusalem available and safe to all these groups of people worldwide?   PALESTINIAN REFUGEES: As a result of the military conflicts in 1948 and again in 1967, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian people fled out of the borders of Israel to the neighboring Gaza Strip, West Bank Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon. They are a people without a country and have not been allowed to become citizens to the countries they fled to. Since 1967, their numbers have increased into the millions...

What did you learn about your topic that you did not expect?            It was interesting to learn more about the disabled community in the past and their struggle for rights since in the time period most things that we learn are about slavery and the civil rights movement while at the same time there were other people struggling.     b. If you had to keep working on your project to improve it, what would you do?          I think that I would like to maybe have a few more interesting facts that related to modern day issues. We do have some it would just be more interesting if we had more relevant ones.     c. What do you like and dislike about project based learning?          I really like that it gives you a chance to collaborate with your peers as ...

Art8 Photo Essay

Image
1. Which photo from your photo essay was the best?    I really liked this photo because the colours really came out and there was no part of the photo that was devoid of some tint. It also focused really well on Ria as well as making the background stand out. You can also clearly see the depth of the road and the building in the distance and the photo looks very cool in that way.  2. What is a Photo Journalist?      A Photo Journalist is someone who takes photos and uses them to convey a message about something that they want to show,  3. If you could do one category of your essay again which one would you re-do and why?      I would want to re-do the people specifically this photo:   I wanted to re-do this photo because even though I like how the photo turned out it could have had better lighting and a background that really made Michelle pop out rather than the things behind her.  4. What is exposure?  ...

Historical Fiction Narrative Poetry and Author's Note

Author’s Note The Victorian era was a time where the world is making the transition into the technological age making it both easier and harder to write. That pulled me into writing about this. After reading Cassandra Clare’s book Clockwork Angel I was intrigued by the story of a girl that had been murdered by an occult society, like a young girl in that book was.  I got to thinking, what if this girl had once been poor? Wha t if she had once seen all the bad in the world? And what would happen if suddenly she was thrust into the life of the rich? What if the woman that took her in forced her to join a society? And what if she wanted to leave? The questions flitted around in my head for so long that I thought I might as well write on the idea thus the idea of Elizabeth Barnes was formed. Most Occult societies were very hush-hush, you gained entrance by knowing people and there are not many recorded societies although there are probably quite a few so researching about them ...
