Printamaking: Drypoint

Image
This project was our second printmaking project. We used some metal carving tools to carve out lines in plexiglass to make our prints. After we finished the carving stage we had to take some ink and roll it out onto the plexiglass. Once the plexiglass was thoroughly covered you then had to take a cheesecloth and wipe off the extra ink and press the ink into the lines. Once the majority was off you could take a q-tip and clean it up just a bit more. While working on all of this your paper would be sitting in water and once you're ready, you dry it off a bit and then you're ready to print. For this project, we used a printing press to make out prints. You put the plexiglass down, ink side up then laid the paper down on top. After that, you'd flip the press so that they were covered and then roll it across and voila! You have a print. I think the difficult part of this was getting a print that looked. nice. I went through 5 or six that didn't turn out the best befo...

Printmaking: Linoleum

Image
For this project, we started a new unit, the printmaking unit. In this unit, we used some new materials including a carving tool, a brayer and a barren. The process for printing starts with tracing the image you want to print onto a piece of paper. From there you trace the simplified image onto both sides of the Linoleum block. One side with the silhouette, the other with details. From there you carve both sides out. Once that is done you use a brayer to put ink onto the silhouette side and then put a paper on top after which you use a barren to help the transfer. After that dries you use another color of ink on the detailed side and repeat the process. The end looks like the images above. I really liked how the endproduct turned out, especially the first one. I wish that I had made the carvings match up so that I wouldn't have had to do it by hand though.

Self Portrait

Image
So this was my grid self-portrait. Getting to this end piece was a bit of a process: first I had a photo taken of me, then I had to edit the photo to make it black and white and a bit easier to draw. After that I had to draw a grid over the picture as well as over the paper I would be drawing on and from there I would be filling in each square with the proper values. I think something I really like about this is that if you look at the top half it genuinely resembles me. The one thing I really wish I could improve on though is the teeth and the mouth. From that point on the drawing kind of went south and that's a bit frustrating. The goal though is to get better at drawing the things I'm not the best with!  This next picture is of my mirror self-portrait. This one was definitely the most difficult of the two, but I still managed to finish! The steps for this were actually quite simple. You draw a base head and put the guidelines for eyes, nose, mouth, and ears and ...

Still Life

Image
Here it is! The final product of the still life drawing! For this piece, we were told to draw an item sitting in front of us a realistically as possible. We started with a contour of the object and from there went up to shading and highlights to make the object stand out and look good. One thing that I really like about this is that I was able to create the shadows and highlights that make the apple look somewhat realistic. the shading took some time and a few re-do's but in the end, it turned out pretty well. I would have liked to improve the background and give the drawing some depth to make the scene look real and the apple look 3D. This was my draft where I practiced how to use the drawing technique triangle. Triangle is when you have one object in front of two others in a triangle formation. Out of all the ones I tried this was the most successful since I was able to capture the contour of the of the objects and place them in a way that was visually interesting. ...

Linear Perspective

Image
This was our linear perspective drawing, we started with different shapes on the paper and connected the corners of them to a single point. From there we shaded the paper with some charcoal and color and then highlighted the shapes to give them a bit of a building like look. I think that the one thing that I could improve on is maybe me my shading, getting the values to be darker near the vanishing point and getting progressively lighter as I go out and one thing I really liked about it was that I had this circular motion thing going on with the whole page.  This was the two point perspective drawing where we were to draw a city from eye level. There were two vanishing points along the sides where we connected the edges of the building to give the picture a three-dimensional feel.  The one thing I really regret is that I haven't had the time to finish the piece. My goal is to end up finishing it and being able to show off my drawing. But what I ...
