Sustained Investigation 8

SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION: What does it mean to be sheltered?      Ideas Visually Evident:  I knew that I wanted to create an umbrella in order to think about the idea of shelter from the outside but while ideating I was talking to some friends and the idea of hanging the clouds underneath the umbrella came up. I thought it was a really interesting concept and it turned out really well. Processes Used:  I spent a lot of time just getting the bamboo skewers to stay up and used a lot of glue to keep everything attached.     Materials:  Rice Paper, Bamboo Sticks, Wood, Cotton Process Shots:  Final Product:

SUSTAINED INVESTIGATION:  What does it mean to be sheltered?  Ideas Visually Evident: I wanted to go with what being sheltered makes you think this time. I've always thought that if you are sheltered as a kid you tend to think that the world around you is perfect when really everything may just be burning down around you.  Processes Used:  I created the inside environment before constructing a frame to go around the dome and attaching flames.  Materials : Moss. Sculpey, Tissue paper.   Process Shots:  this was the fail tree :( Final Product:  (I will continue to edit the photo)

Sustained Investigation: Past Halfway

Screenshots: Where is the Synthesis?     Ideas : I feel like I connected the literal idea of shelter and then use Sustainned 4 as a transition into the more conceptual side.      Materials : For the materials, I've used very sturdy materials even if they have varied slightly. I think this also adds a connected element of sturdiness throughout this investigation.      Process : I think that I've been questioning the word shelter a lot and that has lead me to be creative in the way that I ideate for this sustained and I think that's evident in the pieces that I have put out.  Where are your hiccups?   I feel like I learned a little bit about making my Sculpey too thin and not putting any support in it. I'm going to do my best to remember that mistake in my future projects!  I had a bit of a hiccup with my bamboo legs splitting from where they were put together. It was because of this and the general haphazardness of the whole pi...

SUSTAINED QUESTION:  What does it mean to be sheltered?  Ideas Visually Evident: I wanted to use the literal conceptual meaning of being sheltered, which happens to be hiding away or covering the eyes of someone to  Processes Used:  I created a flat face, then wrapped a flat piece around before sculpting and attaching fingers. Materials: Clay Process Shots: Final Product: (Note: I am editing these photos!)

SUSTAINED QUESTION:  What does it mean to be sheltered? Ideas Visually Evident: Now that I've begun the move into more conceptual ideas of shelter, I knew that I wanted to play with the idea of a helicopter parent. Going about it was difficult, and I truly understood the feeling of having an idea and not being able to execute it the way you thought of it. I had to work around the limitations in order to figure out how to portray what I wanted to and I think it came through! Processes Used:  I wrapped the string around the mannequin then sculpted the figure then laser-cut blades. Materials: String, (mannequin?), Sculpey, Glass, plexiglass.  Process Shots:  Final Product:   (Note: I am editing these!)

SUSTAINED QUESTION:  What does it mean to be sheltered? Ideas Visually Evident:  The idea is all about home is where the heart is and the piece portrays it literally, sheltering something we guard closely. Processes Used:  I cut each shape from flat pieces of Sculpey, then created a heart. Then painted the pieces before attaching. Materials: Sculpey, Acrylic Paint Process Shots:  Final Product:

Semester 1 Art Show

Museum/Gallery Visit 2

These pieces are from the Art Institute of Chicago. This first piece shows what I think is one aspect of shelter and I want to be able to put this kind of image into my own work. One of my main takeaways is that working on a small sculpture can really hit home seeing as though this piece really brought me a small sense of awe when I got to see it in person a couple of summers ago. Another thing is that there are places that you can center detail in order to make a sculpture elegant such as the folds on the legs versus the simplicity in the torso. I think it's given me some ideas in where to put my effort when creating a piece.  This piece is a lot more abstract, it's very simple and yet still very intriguing to look at, and that element of interest is kind of cool. There are very simple shapes, the cube, and the wheel but there is also a natural element to it with the branches. I may incorporate that angular but natural aspect in my work next semester, going out onto campus and...
