Semester 1 Art Show

Museum/Gallery Visit 2

These pieces are from the Art Institute of Chicago. This first piece shows what I think is one aspect of shelter and I want to be able to put this kind of image into my own work. One of my main takeaways is that working on a small sculpture can really hit home seeing as though this piece really brought me a small sense of awe when I got to see it in person a couple of summers ago. Another thing is that there are places that you can center detail in order to make a sculpture elegant such as the folds on the legs versus the simplicity in the torso. I think it's given me some ideas in where to put my effort when creating a piece.  This piece is a lot more abstract, it's very simple and yet still very intriguing to look at, and that element of interest is kind of cool. There are very simple shapes, the cube, and the wheel but there is also a natural element to it with the branches. I may incorporate that angular but natural aspect in my work next semester, going out onto campus and...

Gallery Visit 1

Image
The Gallery that I found was the Sculpture Gallery from the Glass House created by Philip Johnson. While there are many different types of sculptures inside, what caught my eye the most was the gallery itself, the building that housed so much art. It was made specifically to hold sculptures and this gave me ideas for my own sustained investigation.  1. The gallery as you can see in the picture above was built around the sculptures, and it allowed me to take away the idea that I could build a structure around something that was considered 'shelter' as per my question.  2.  The next takeaway was lighting. The way that the gallery was made allows for light to change the way that things look depending on the time of day. It uses geometric patterns which were not something that I had thought about for my own works before this.  3.  The third takeaway was that of contrast in the material. This particular photo shows the contrast between the floor walls and ceili...

Plaster Form

Image
Ideas Visually Evident:  I aimed to make forms with negative space but to also play with a more solid form as well.  Materials: Plaster Processes Used:  I held each of the three in different ways to create unique forms and incorporate different elements.  Process Shots:   Final Product:

Elevated Bowl

Image
Ideas Visually Evident:  When I heard elevated, I wanted to incorporate the imagery of wings or feathers into the design.  Materials: Clay, Feathers Processes Used:   I used clay for wing-like forms then raku fired and burned the impression of feathers into one side.  References:    Process Shots:  Final Product:

Paper Form

Image
Ideas Visually Evident:   I wanted to juxtapose something solid with something fragile so I decided to create boxes and stack them.  Materials Used: Paper Processes Used:  I folded and glued different shaped boxes then attached them using more glue I then added lights. Process Shots: Final Product:

Cardboard Form

Image
Ideas Visually Evident:  I wanted to portray the concept of what time does to us so I chose a pocket watch with a skeleton hand. Materials Used: Cardboard Processes Used:  I referenced a diagram and created hollow tubes that I carved into the shape of bones then glued them. References:      Process Shots:  Final Product:
