Semester 2 Final: Greatest Fear and Joy

Image
For my final this semester I made a really long list to figure out what I was going to use for my greatest fear and joy. It was only after making those lists did I figure out exactly what it was. I'm terrified of deadlines, most people are rushing and you're unsure of the quality of your work and you just wish there was more time to keep working. When I'm super stressed about deadlines, I find solace in a good book, or 10. That's where my greatest fear and joy came from. I know Time management was a big issue for me because of Ramadan but I'm happy that I was able to complete it. I used mixed media: A combination of rapidograph, color pencil, and watercolor to achieve the effects that I wanted. I really like the composition of the piece and I'm glad that the colors ended up being as vivid as possible. I do think though, that the composition of the calendar could be improved upon as something to maybe add on in the future if I decide to revisit this piece. ...

Painting: Water Color

Image
Our watercolor project has probably been the project that I've enjoyed the most this year.  I think it was a combination of the open theme as well as the medium that made me enjoy it. I put a lot of thought into what I was going to focus on seeing as though this time of the school year is pretty rough, so I ended up with something relatively simple.  I focused a lot on shadows and saturation of color while working, hoping to attain a really strong contrast that I think I achieved. One thing that I would definitely like to improve upon is the details of hair,  I was really unsure of how to attack the problem without mixing media so I eventually went to some of the other people in our class for advice. I'm actually quite satisfied with the piece and there's not as much that I'd like to change as compared to previously. After doing this and measuring the amount of work and effort I'm considering using watercolor for our final as well.  Permission...

Painting: Acrylic

Image
So our acrylic painting project was probably the most stressful project for me to date. After getting the sketch down and taking a step back the size and amount of work that would need to go into the piece did intimidate me a little. As someone that doesn't work with paints too often, this was also a very large challenge, especially with the clothes. I do wish that I could spend more time working on it since I'm sure that it's not at the best it could be at. Out of the many things to work on I think working on finding shades and tones would be the one to improve on the most with this as well as time management. It's been a very long process with several redos on sections so all the process photos are below too. Feedback: Keona - More texture differences and distinction between the materials, the hair could use some more texture as well. But the blending is really nice too.   Anika - Defining the objects a little more. Contrast is something that could be...

Figure Drawing : Live

Image
This was the last live figure drawing that we did during this unit and I think there's a lot to say. I didn't go realistic and have lots of shading or even draw the face at all which I think counts against the point of the figure drawing and the left hand is also really messed up. I am happy that I was eventually able to get the proportions of the figure mostly down as well as understand how to draw wrinkles. The background is also something that I really liked. I know the unit is over but something that I'll probably work on is facial features.  This was the drawing using the Conte chalk which I had some difficulty with. With the pen, I can sketch before I commit to the lines that I'm drawing but with the chalk when you lay it down you're never going to get the whiteness of the paper back. In the end, I think that it also turned out looking more like a panel of a comic than real life but I don't think that the composition itself looks bad.

Figure Drawing - Ink

Image
This was the rapidograph! I think that out of this and the Prismacolors this was my favorite. I really like doing line art so being able to do this was really fun. Something that I find really interesting though is that I had a lot of difficulty with the shading. Our class was talking about it after we finished and we came to the conclusion that while stippling is much more difficult, it looks much better than my crosshatching. After doing this once there are already things that I wish I could go back and change like what I mentioned before, the shading as well as the contour for the teeth. Seeing as this was a timed drawing though I think that I did get much more done than I thought that I would.  And of course, this is the pen and Prismacolor piece. I really like how this one turned out. I think that I was able to get some fine details into the coloring and that the proportions weren't off this time like they were when I tried to draw the rubber hand. I know tha...

Figure Drawing - Pastels

Image
This was I think a better attempt at the whole assignment. After working on the pencil I sort of had an idea of how the composition was supposed to look before I did. A big part of this was the values and the colours and so as I tried to draw this I drew out the shapes of the shadows to get a better look. I wasn't able to finish this in the hour but I think that it looks pretty decent. I tried to get the wood grain to make it look a little more realistic.I did have trouble with the hand though, the finger joints weren't really proportional and I wasn't really able to get the shading down.  A Single Attendance Question: 1. What superhero is the most like you?

Figure Drawing - Pencil

Image
I think that this was a pretty good first try for figure drawing. I noticed that as we progressed through them I was actually improving which was really nice to see. One thing that I learned for sure was that you really need to pay attention to the angle that you're sitting at and how you zoom into real life when drawing something. That sizing this is what I'm trying to pay attention to now looking at how I tried to encompass the entire figure drawing on one page.

Triptych Final: "A Day in the Life of..."

Image
The entire process of this project was really long and kind of complicated the more that I think about it. We started formulating the ideas during our oil pastel project and finally! It's done! I know that I'm pretty satisfied with my work. I like the way that it's turned out and I like how it's come together. If I could go back and change anything though, it would probably be the idea to do a cityscape in the first piece and then a house in the third one. I didn't quite anticipate how hard it was to draw architecture until I had already gone too far ahead. I think that out of the three the second is my favorite mostly because of the contrast just the overall feeling that I get from looking at it. Each of these scenes is sort of interconnected, if you put the first and third pieces together they connect and you can see bits of the first two pieces coming together in the third piece. They flow together for the most part which is what's really important I t...

Oil Pastel Project

Image
FEEDBACK Tamsin - Color is nice and the hair is vibrant the couch has good shading. maybe a little too much negative space but it blends in really well.  Keona -The background is really nice and the texture is nice and it looks really 3D but the hair looks more like one chunk rather than actual hair. You could use a q-tip to blend out more and to pull out more strands. Kelly - The details of the words are really cool and the contrast on the hair is nice and the use of the negative space looks nice. Maybe the face shape and structure could be improved but other than that I really like it.  Jay - The perspective works really well and the detail and textures are really nice and I think that it adds a lot of realism. I like the way that you varied your lines on the hair so that it would look different. I think that you could have maybe found more of a center to the entire piece. REFLECTION This was the oil pastel project and I think that it turned out really nice?...

Color Pencil Drawing

Image
The color pencil project! I thought that this project was really fun, although it was kind of difficult. The holiday that I was showing was my birthday. My mom has the tradition of coming to our rooms and hanging up banners and giving us a cake before we head off to school (my birthday has been during the school week for the last forever). This drawing is that.  I think that during this project my strength lied a lot in my composition. When we were giving each other feedback I got a lot of compliments on it and I also think that the placement does a good job of showing off all the elements that I tried to incorporate. I did struggle a lot with the shading. I wasn't able to make good use of darker values and while I did get compliments on the color scheme something that I could work on would be using more contrast in order to make sure that every element had its place and that the main focus (the cake) didn't just fade into the background.  Something that I'm de...

Charcoal Still Life

Image
FINAL PRODUCT DAY ONE DAY TWO DAY THREE This was our charcoal still life! I remember doing this for the first time in Art foundation and it being something that I really enjoyed and I'm happy to say that I still do. This project took a lot of time, unfortunately, I happened to miss one of the classes so I don't have all five days of work but I did work after school a lot so that I could finish. A lot of the feedback that I got was about my contour lines not being present enough and after looking at other peoples work and then looking at my own I understand why they said that. I had to change the shape of all my objects so many times that I think the contour was lost and if I could re-do the project that would be something that I focused on more. All in all, I think that I'm kind of proud of this project since I believe that it is one of the better things that I've drawn in the past years. I know that I did struggle a lot with the sizi...

Egg Composition

Image
So this was the Egg Composition! It's our first piece in Studio Art and while the concept wasn't too difficult to wrap one's mind around it did get a bit difficult when trying to translate that onto paper. My original idea was to use the idea of space and emphasis to show how eggs really symbolize us as people and how sometimes things can be shown differently. You can see the emphasis is on the egg in the middle, it takes the place of the singers head, all cracked and with bits of egg dripping out and it's surrounded by white and is towards the middle of the piece. But when you move to the third corner of the triangle (made by the middle egg, the head sort of in front of it and the phone in the corner) you can see that the egg in the video being made is whole, not showing the full picture. I tried to use space was to try to show how in front it can seem like something is a certain way but when it's zoomed out and you can see the rest of the picture it's ...

Course Goals

Image
GOALS Some goals that I have for this year in terms of art are probably learning about figure drawing since it's something that I have tried but wasn't any improvement from a vaguely humanoid figure even though I practiced. This class will hopefully teach me how to learn to do that properly. If we're actually talking about overall school goals I think that my goal is to stay on top of my homework since it's only the third day and I'm already scrambling a bit. ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ART The elements of art include color, form, line, space, texture, and value. The elements help art transfer from the brain onto paper since they are the main component in anyone's artwork. This is an image that shows it pretty well in my opinion.   The principles of art include balance, emphasis, movement, proportion, rhythm, unity and variety. The principles can help you structure your art and help to organize it. Here's an image that can help show it. COL...
