Government 101

Monarchy -- A government by one ruler such as a king or queen. Passed down from one generation to the next in the same family, heredity.

Oligarchy -- A government by ruling elite group of people. The rulers make decisions to benefit themselves.

Democracy -- The rules and decisions are made by a majority (51%). A super majority is 60%

Republic -- Decisions are held accountable to the law. The majority doesn't make the final decisions. The decision is up to the laws.

Anarchy -- There is no government. People are allowed to make their own decisions. This includes defending their own land, property and themselves

Why does America have federal and state governments?
The state government checks the federal government and doesn't allow them to have too much power and vice versa. Singaporeans may find it difficult to understand because Singaporean government has total control and with it being an island it's easier to control the people.
the federal government controls the larger and international issues and the state government cover smaller more local areas.
